Australia’s National AI Centre (NAIC) published the Guidance for AI Adoption on 21 October 2025, providing practical direction to help organisations adopt and manage AI responsibly. The new guidance builds on NAIC’s earlier Foundations for AI Adoption and introduces the Implementation Practices, outlining step-by-step actions to embed responsible AI principles into business processes.
The document offers a clear roadmap for organisations to:
- Assess AI readiness and identify suitable use cases
- Establish governance structures and accountability mechanisms
- Manage data quality, bias, privacy, and model risks
- Implement monitoring, assurance, and continuous improvement practices
This comprehensive guidance supports alignment with ISO 42001 AI Management Systems and complements the Government’s broader Responsible AI Framework and AI Assurance Framework initiatives.
What it contains
The guidance is presented in two versions:
- Foundations – for organisations beginning their AI journey (low-risk use cases, limited governance maturity).
- Implementation Practices – for organisations with more advanced AI adoption, higher-risk contexts, or technical/ governance maturity.
To support practical implementation, the guidance includes tools and templates, such as:
- an AI screening tool to assess the level of governance oversight needed for each AI system.
- an AI policy guide and policy template for establishing organisational AI governance.
- an AI register template to catalogue AI systems and their associated risks.
- a glossary of terms and definitions to support consistent understanding.
